Fehrenbach studied industrial engineering at the University of Karlsruhe.
He began his career at Bosch in 1975, as a trainee. Following various career stages and management positions in Germany and other countries, Fehrenbach became a member of the Bosch Group board of management in 1999, and its chairman in 2003. At the same time, he became a shareholder of Robert Bosch Industrietreuhand KG. He has been chairman of the supervisory board of Robert Bosch GmbH since July 1, 2012 and also managing partner of Robert Bosch Industrietreuhand KG. He is a member of the Senate of the Max Planck Society as well as of the board of the Stifterverband, a joint initiative of German industries to promote science and higher education, and a member of the board of trustees of the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT). He is also a member of the supervisory board of BASF SE as well as of Linde AG, and a member of the advisory board of Stihl Holding AG & Co. KG. He is also an advocate for education and entrepreneurship in his role as steering committee chair for “Wissensfabrik – Unternehmen für Deutschland e.V.”. This initiative brings companies and foundations together in order to prepare Germany’s next generation for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
In 2006, Fehrenbach was named “Eco-Manager of the Year” in the companies category by the environmental foundation WWF Deutschland and the German business magazine “Capital.” In February 2012, the German business magazine “Capital” named him the “Greentech Manager of the Year 2011.”
