Lars-Hendrik Röller
Lars-Hendrik Röller’s academic career began at the Department of Economics at University of Pennsylvania, where he also held a position at the Institute for Law and Economics. In 1987 Professor Röller was appointed professor at the business school INSEAD in France, a position he held until 1999. In 1994 Professor Röller became the Director of the research unit “Competitiveness and Industrial Change” at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin (WZB), Europe’s largest social science research center. In 1995 he was appointed Professor for Industrial Economics at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. From September 2003 until taking up the presidency at ESMT, Professor Röller was the first Chief Competition Economist of the European Commission, where he was responsible for the economic analysis in merger control, cartel investigations, market abuse and State Aid control.
In addition, Professor Röller has been a Visiting Scholar and Professor at the Autònoma de Barcelona University, New York University and Stanford University, among others. He is a member of various academic associations. He was President of the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE) from 2005-2007 and was Director of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London from 1996-2003. In 2002 he was awarded the Gossen Award, and in 2004 he was appointed Fellow of the European Economic Association. Professor Röller is a non-resident senior fellow at Bruegel, a Brussels-based think tank. He has advised many international companies and organizations as well as various governments on the topics of competition, strategy and regulation.
