Thursday, June 17, 2010

Renowned scholars joined our parellel panels to evaluate the issues we will encounter in the years to come: climate change, demographic shifts, an unstable economic outlook, the growing need for international cooperation, smart regulation – and above all, the paradigm changes required to balance the demands of people, planet, and profit.

After Copenhagen what? Given the general disappointment the question arises what stakeholders still expect and what suppliers can and have to do. The session aims to contrast these views. In the first part, political pathways to a low-carbon economy are presented, evaluated, and discussed, both from a European and a US perspective.

In the second part, we focus on how energy companies pursue different strategies to secure current market share. We will debate their innovative strengths and weaknesses and assess their potential to play a mjaor role in the green economy.

10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. FULLY BOOKED: Panel III - Profit: Doing Well With Doing Good

The breakout session on “profit” hopes to accomplish two main objectives:

First, we shall explore what companies need to do to combine “doing well with doing good.” In other words, often times achieving “planet” and “people” goals is viewed as a zero-sum game when combined with the goal of “profit maximization.” But does it have to be this way? What strategies can companies formulate and implement to create both business and social value?

The second objective is to explore our obsession with “profit” itself. What can we do as a community to transition from a “single bottom line” craze to think seriously about the “triple bottom line” concept whereby companies are not only judged by profitability but also by their social and environmental performance?
